I must say that I was pretty pleased when we found out we were moving to Sydney, one reason being that there would not be a significant language barrier. However, we have since learned that the Aussies speak a little bit different than we are used to. They love nicknames and shortened phrases, for example, they will call a tradesman a tradey! It hasn't been that challenging to figure out, but quite fun to learn their different words and phrases! And, yes, my kids definitely have picked up a little accent, which we love!
Here are a few of our favorites...(in my best Aussie accent! )
We say drinking fountain in the states...they say bubbler.
We say shopping cart...they say trolley.
elevator...they say lift.
gasoline...petrol
parking lot...car park (and it's pronounces "ca - pak").
garbage...is rubbish; and you throw it in bin...not a can.
a stroller is...a pram
jacket...jumper
car trunk...boot
soccer cleats... also called boots
soccer...football
rugby...footy (although, i think they use this term loosely for a number of sports).
crashed, as in crashed on a bike...is stacked.
opening times at the store....trading hours at the shop
candy...lolly
cookie...biscuit
juice box...popper
green or red pepper...capsicum
cilantro...coriander (I was really nervous when I first got here and they didn't have cilantro!)
How are you doing?... How ya going?
Can I have a turn? ... Can I have a go?
We usually say "good job"...they say "well done."
I need to use the bathroom ... I need to go to the toilet.
We say something is "cute"... they say it is "gorgeous."
We have also had to learn to spell a few words differently after they were marked "incorrect" on the kids spelling tests at school!
color...colour
airplane...aeroplane
harbor...harbour
center...centre
